How to Make the Perfect Pork Dumplings


Dumplings are something enjoyed by cultures all over the world, with the first filled ones appearing in China over 1,800 years ago! Considering it’s so easy to make dough wrappers and fillings, it’s no wonder why people from all over the world have made their own versions.

Chinese Pork Dumplings

Let’s first start with the pork dumpling almost everyone’s familiar with: Chinese pork dumplings! To make things easier on you, we’ll give you the simplest recipe to start with. Once you’re familiar with making dumplings, you can always add more ingredients to your taste.

The ingredients you’ll need are flour, water, Napa cabbage, ground pork, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and pepper. Later, you can add things like garlic, chili pepper, and shiitake mushrooms.

First, you’ll want to tackle the dough. Mix a 1:1 ratio of flour and water until it’s smooth. While it’s resting, time to make the filling!

You’ll want to first blanch half a head of cabbage so it’s soft. Squeeze out the water and then chop the cabbage into tiny little pieces. Also, chop up 1 green onion.

In a bowl, put the cabbage bits, green onion, half a pound of ground pork, 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, salt, pepper, and the water squeezed from the cabbage. Mix everything until it’s blended together nicely.

After the dough’s rested, break it into smaller pieces that are about 2.5 inches in diameter when rolled out. Get a small spoonful of the filling mix, and place it on the wrapper.

Dip your finger in a small bowl of water and wet half of the outer lip of the wrapper. Then, pleat the dumpling closed.

You can then cook the dumplings immediately (by boiling or pan-frying) or freeze them for later use.


Pierogis are the Polish version of dumplings. To make them, you’ll need just flour, egg, water, ground pork, onion, oil (or lard), butter, salt, and Pieprz Ziolowy, which is a type of herbal pepper from Poland.

To make the dough, mix 3 cups flour with half a teaspoon of salt on your countertop. Form a volcano-like structure and crack the egg in the middle.

Mix the flour and salt well with the egg and slowly add water. Then, knead the dough until it’s smooth.

Now dice 1/4th cup of onion and saute it until it’s translucent. Let it cool and while waiting, mix together the pork, salt, and Pieprz Ziolowy. Once the onions have cooled down, mix that in as well.

Like with the Chinese dumplings, roll out the dough into 3-inch circles in diameter. Fill with spoonfuls of the filling, pleat, and then cook by boiling in water for 5 minutes. If you want some extra flavor, you can then saute the pierogis in salt.


Now we move to the Philippines! While empanadas are typically from Latin America, the pork version is more popularly made in this Asian country.

The ingredients you’ll need are ground pork, carrots, green peas, potatoes, yellow onion, raisins, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, oil, beef broth, flour, butter, egg, milk, salt, and pepper.

To make the dough, mix together 3 cups flour with half a teaspoon of salt in a food processor. Then, cut 1 cup of unsalted butter into the machine, then an egg, and then 10 tablespoons of milk slowly. Once the mixture is smooth, chill the dough for at least 20 minutes.

To prepare the filling, chop all the ingredients from above. Brown the ground pork, then add 1 medium onion; cook until it’s translucent.

Next, add half a cup raisins, 1/4th cup Worcestershire sauce, and half a cup of beef broth. Simmer the mixture for 10 minutes, then add half a cup of peas, 1 carrot, and 1 potato.

Simmer for another 10 minutes. Now add 1 tablespoon brown sugar, salt, and pepper.

Cut the empanada dough after chilling and place some filling inside. Pinch the empanadas closed and crimp the sides with a fork. Mix together egg white and milk for the egg wash.

First, bake the empanadas for 15 minutes. Then, brush the egg wash over them and bake for another 5 minutes.

Get Them Premade
